Popular assessment methods include but are not limited to the list below. In many instances, more than one method will be used to provide a better view of the learner’s overall skills level.
The assessor observes how the learner performs their daily tasks. It is a direct way of evaluating competency as it takes place in the actual workplace. It is cost-effective and non-disruptive.


A simulation of the workplace is set up in an external environment. The learner is then assessed on technical skills while performing the task or role-playing is used to assess business skills. A particular situation i.e., an emergency can be simulated to see how the learner will respond.
Interviews or casual conversations with the learner are used to assess competency. The assessor asks in-depth questions to explore the learner’s perceptions and views.


Most learners are familiar with testing and this form of assessment provides extensive information on the learner’s level of knowledge and ability to perform practical tasks in a test environment. The leaner is evaluated against a predefined benchmark.
